In 2018, Friends of the Elephant Seal celebrates 20-years of successful advocacy. In 1998, a pregnant elephant seal gave birth in the small cove just south of the Piedras Blancas Light Station. Today, the rookery is home to over 25,000 elephant seals thanks to the tireless work of volunteers, protection agencies and advocates who successfully worked together to form a long-term solution to problems between humans (and cars, parking, tourist buses, private property, etc.) and elephant seals.
