On Thursday, February 25, 2021, Caltrans announced that major emergency repairs of Highway 1 on the Big Sur Coast at Rat Creek will begin March 1, 2021 and that it estimates it will fully reopen the famed roadway early this summer.

Caltrans will reconnect the roadway at Rat Creek with an enhanced fill option and construct a new road on top of the fill. The plan calls for work seven days a week during daylight hours, with longer shifts possible as the project progresses. To view the full press release, click HERE.

California travelers hoping to visit the seaside towns of San Simeon and Ragged Point have a pleasant alternative to the temporarily closure of Highway 1 north of Ragged Point. The Highway 46 gateway to the Central Coast is a picturesque stretch of road that extends from Highway 101 in Paso Robles and leads the traveler west (approximately 27 miles to Highway 1 intersection). Vineyards cover both sides of Highway 46 as it meanders through lush green hills, yielding a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean from atop the Santa Lucia Mountain Range, seemingly to welcome the traveler's visit.

Guests coming from San Luis Obispo can experience some of the best stretches of Highway 1, including driving through the quaint coastal communities of Morro Bay, Cayucos and Cambria.

Stay in San Simeon and enjoy a peaceful escape. Let us host you at one of our boutique hotels or vacation rentals. Explore the scenic coastline on our numerous hiking trails or while viewing elephant seals at the Piedras Blancas Rookery. Spend your days at the beach with oceanside wine tasting at Hearst Ranch Winery or kayaking through San Simeon Cove. Our charming town has much to offer and we look forward to welcoming you.
