Wind Sports

Calling all beach lovers and adventure seekers. Wind sports are a popular pastime along the Central California shores. A wind sport is considered any outdoor activity that involves or requires wind-power. Whether you are an experienced wind sport junkie or a novice eager to ride the waves, the coastal winds around San Simeon beaches offer an excellent chance to take part in wind sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. In particular, Arroyo Laguna and Pico Creek are favorite spots among locals, open to anyone looking to catch some air.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing first emerged amidst the growing surf culture in California during the 1960s. It is best described as a hybrid water sport, somewhere between sailing and surfing. The surfer rides a light board across the water’s surface using the traction force generated by the sail to move. Since its origin, windsurfing has gained a significant following both recreationally and professionally. Windsurfing is a user-friendly activity and is safe for beginners of all ages. The sport of windsurfing undergoes constant re-invention, branching into various forms and modifications over time, including kitesurfing.

Kitesurfing (also known as kiteboarding)

Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, is a new, extreme-sport version of windsurfing. This fast-paced activity utilizes a “power kite” to catch the wind and propel the rider and his board through the water. Experienced kitesurfers can complete advanced jumps and flips using both the wind and the waves. This activity requires sufficient wind, as well as proper tools and instruction to complete safely. Lessons and rental equipment are available at multiple locations along the coast.
