The Legacy of Hearst Castle’s Julia Morgan

Honoring Woman’s History Month

This March, celebrate Woman’s History Month by exploring iconic landmarks, such as Hearst Castle, designed by pioneering architect Julia Morgan. From elegant private homes to sprawling estates, her extraordinary work has secured her place as one of America’s most influential architects.

Morgan began her career studying civil engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. During this time, she developed a passion for architecture which led her to study at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1896, where she became the first woman to attend and receive a certificate in architecture. Eight years later, Morgan opened her own architectural firm and began working on a series of projects. Her distinctive style drew heavily from elements that strongly reflected the Arts and Craft movement, featuring exposed support beams, horizontal lines that blended with the landscape, and extensive use of shingles.

Hearst Castle

In 1919, William Randolph Hearst hired her to design a main building and guest houses for his ranch in San Simeon, California. Drawing on her expertise in both architecture and engineering, she oversaw construction over the next 28 years and personally planned nearly every aspect, including the buildings, unique pools, and animal shelters. Additionally, she collaborated with Hearst to incorporate his extensive art collection into the grounds. By 1947, although the castle remained incomplete, Morgan’s work concluded after Hearst ended funding for the project.

Over the course of her career, Morgan designed hundreds of buildings, yet for decades her work went largely unrecognized. It wasn’t until a biography was published in 1988 that the world began to fully appreciate her groundbreaking achievements. In 2014, over fifty years after her
passing, Morgan became the first woman to be awarded the American Institute of Architects’ Gold Medal, the organization’s highest honor. Today, her work is celebrated not only for its architectural brilliance but also for embracing modernity and reflecting the expanding roles of women beyond the home in the years leading up to World War II.

Now, you can step into Morgan’s extraordinary vision at Hearst Castle, where her unique designs continue to inspire. In addition to the variety of tours offered, the Julia Morgan Tour provides an in-depth look at her life and career, featuring photographic displays of architectural drawings, family photos, and personal items that reveal the creativity behind her work.

This March, celebrate Morgan’s legacy and the remarkable achievements of women in design. Whether you are a fan of architecture, history, or breathtaking scenery, this iconic estate offers an unforgettable glimpse into one of California’s most treasured landmarks.
