Luxury on the Coast of San Simeon

Adventure, outdoors and luxury may not seem like the most likely pairing but that’s exactly what to expect when you visit San Simeon this spring. Outdoor activities kick into high gear this time of year, making now an excellent opportunity to come experience Central Coast nature alongside the luxury of an oceanfront vacation.

Cavalier Oceanfront Resort is a prime choice to use as a home base while visiting. Right in the heart of San Simeon, it’s a quick drive to the Elephant Seal Vista Point, Hearst State Beach, Piedras Blancas Light Station, and Moonstone Beach in Cambria. Even better is an Oceanfront Suite at Cavalier for direct beach access right from the room. Enjoy the soothing sound of ocean waves through the evening and take advantage of the on-site amenities like Cavalier Kitchen and spa services.

Speaking of Cavalier Kitchen, what better way to fuel up before a day of adventure than with locally sourced ingredients in hearty breakfast fare? Steak and eggs, chilaquiles, and vegan burritos are just a few of the delicious options here. Breakfast is served until 11:30am so it’s perfectly fine – and recommended – to sleep in a little longer before starting the day.

After lingering in bed or over breakfast, head up Highway 1 for some of the most stunning views in the world. It’s hard not to be bowled over by the dramatic, rocky cliffs that drop off towards the churning Pacific Ocean. Take it slow because there’s plenty to see here and life along the Central Coast should never, ever be hurried.

Ragged Point Swift Falls Hike

Make Ragged Point the destination for the unique aspects of this pocket of Highway 1. Hike around the grounds of Ragged Point Inn for breathtaking vistas, and, for the brave, head down the long steep steps to the beach far below. There, take in the one of the few coastal waterfalls in the area. Watch sea birds dive deep into the waves in search of food. This gorgeous combination of ocean and pine trees is the gateway to Northern California and the Pacific North West.

Stop off at the Ragged Point Restaurant for lunch before heading back to San Simeon. The glass-encased eatery offers magnificent viewing of the Pacific Coast in all its glory. Local seafood, salads, burgers, and more offer up an upscale-casual dining experience. For those who aren’t quite hungry enough for a full meal, the adjoining café has delicious coffee beverages and pastries for grab-and-go options.

Hearst Ranch Winery Wine Tasting San Simeon

After refueling, head back down Highway 1 towards Hearst Castle. This stellar landmark is an experience all on its own. Learn about Willam Randolph Hearst’s obsession with art and artifacts from around the world. Marvel at Julia Morgan’s architectural design in and around the grounds. And, of course, take time to breathe in the views from this magnificent vantage point.

To unwind after a long day, head across Highway 1 to Hearst Ranch Winery’s tasting room. This convivial space invites guests to taste through the winery’s delicious wines right above Hearst State Beach. Order a glass to enjoy at sunset, or even better, take a bottle back to Cavalier for evening sipping on the beach.
